Ramos Roundup Part 3: Hey Now, You’re an All-Star

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies take two to All-Star Game in The Emerald City

With the MLB All-Star Game set to take place on Tuesday in Seattle, the Phillies are bringing two representatives. It was announced early evening this past Sunday that Nick Castellanos would be named to his second career all-star appearance, but as of Saturday, Phillies RHP Craig Kimbrel was also selected. Kimbrel, who replaced Brewers’ relief pitcher Devin Williams on the NL roster, earned National League Reliever of the Month honors in June, going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA and five saves in 13 appearances, according to Todd Zolecki. This marks the ninth time Kimbrel has been named to the mid-summer classic in his career.

Union’s Glesnes joins teammate Martinez at MLS All-Star Game

In keeping with the Philly All-Star motif, Union center back Jakob Glesnes was added to the MLS All-Star Team Roster earlier this week. Glesnes, 29, is making his second consecutive all-star appearance and owns the longest active ironman streak in MLS, making 93 consecutive starts for the Union.

Pat Beverly’s a Treasure and that Paul Reed Contract

On the PatBevPod, the most significant signee of the Sixers off-season Pat Beverly made a funny gesture about Philadelphia that you can see above. Beverly should help bring a level of leadership and grit to a Sixer lineup to appears to lack, especially in the post-season. It’s been an underwhelming off-season to date for Philly, but Beverly should liven that up a bit with his arrival.

Speaking of the Sixers, restricted free agent Paul Reed, signed a three-year, $23M offer sheet with the Utah Jazz and according to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Sixers have decided to match the deal. Philly had until Sunday at midnight to match the sheet and retain Reed. From my vantage point, it would have likely been wise for the Sixers to move on here. Now with Reed retained, the Sixers will be taking on millions in luxury tax penalties and with Joel Embiid, the recently signed Mo Bamba, and Montrezl Harrel already under contract, the Sixers now have four Centers under contract.

I’m sure it pained Sixer GM Daryl Morey to lose a young player like Reed for nothing. The 24 year-old stepped up in the Boston series when the team needed him and looked like he could be a contributor in an expanded role. But, incurring this kind of debt for a team that hasn’t proven that it can make a deep post-season run is not necessarily a good piece of business here either. It’s a dubious situation and makes the Sixers front office look bad, as they exposed one of their young players to be offered an offer-sheet in the first place.

Flyers Sign Russian Goaltender Alexei Kolosov to a Three-year, Entry-level Contract

The Flyers announced they have signed prospect goaltender Alexi Kolosov on Sunday. Kolosov, 21, was selected by the Flyers in the 2021 NHL Draft and has since put up some gaudy numbers in Russia’s KHL. Another Flyers goaltender to add to their already expansive goaltender pipeline. In one of the most unpredictable positions in sports, it’s always good to have options in goal and the Flyers have plenty.
