The Ramos roundup is a weekly sports column highlighting all the news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.
Knicks Sweep Sixers
Deuce McBride hit seven 3-pointers, going 4-for-4 in the first quarter, scoring 25 points to help the Knicks sweep the Sixers on Sunday. Jalen Brunson added 22 points, while Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns each scored 17 in New York’s dominating game 4 win as well. The Sixers, on the other hand, got 24 points from Joel Embiid and 17 from Tyrese Maxey in the loss.
The Sixers is still looking to advance out of the second for the first time since 2001 and it’s hard to gauge where exactly they’re are headed after this season. Embiid turned in another oft-injured season and while Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe played well on the whole, that may not be enough to find a pathway to contention. We will, of course, follow the Sixers’ off-season in more detail in this column when more news becomes available.
Phillies Shutout Rockies on Mother’s Day
Kyle Schwarber slugged two home runs in yet another series win for the Phillies on Mother’s Day. Bryce Harper also went back-to-back with Schwarber in the first inning off Tomoyuki Sugano, while Brandon Marsh was 4-for-4 with four singles in the win as well. In fact, Marsh is currently leading the Majors in batting average .353 average.
Don’t look now, but the Phils have collected four straight series wins. Philly will open a three game set with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
Blake Scores OT Winner, Hurricanes Sweep Flyers
The Flyers playoff run has officially ended, thanks to Jackson Blake’s overtime goal on Saturday finished a four-game sweep. Blake scored five minutes into overtime for his second tally of the game to help Carolina to the Eastern Conference finals for the second straight season. Alex Bump and Tyson Foerster scored for Philadelphia in the 3-2 loss.
It was a tough way to end a fun season for the Flyers. At one time, making the playoffs, especially this yea felt far-fetched, let alone making a 2nd round appearance so ultimately, the Flyers should take that as a win.
As we look ahead to what the off-season brings, there’s a good foundation here with some talented young players in Philadelphia. The club’s locker-room clean out day is scheduled for Monday so we’ll see what Rick Tocchet, his players and the front office has to say about the plan going forward. We’ll conclude our Flyers coverage sometime in the coming week or so.
Revolution Score Twice, Defeat Union in New England
The season from hell continued for the Union Saturday night, as they dropped yet another decision, this time in New England to the Revolution. Philadelphia opened the scoring in the 37th minute with an own goal from by William Sands. New England, however, responded with second half goals in the 61st minute from Luca Langoni and then again in the 87th minute from Carles Gil. To insult to injury, the club also lost right-back Frankie Westfield to an injury in the 31st minute. Westfield, 20, is making strides defensively this season and just beginning to break into the starting XI so should he miss any length of time, that would be a difficult pill to swallow.
The Union return to action on Wednesday, May 13, to face Orlando City SC. The match is set for 7:30 p.m. and will broadcast on Apple TV.
