Ramos Round Part 50: Are We Back on Track?

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies Take 3-of-4 From Lowly Nationals

After a weekend of rookies hitting for the cycle (what up, Weston Wilson?) and alumni festivities, the Phils couldn’t complete the sweep on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. Matt Strahm officially took the loss in the 6-4 defeat, but could the Fightins be getting back to their winning ways? Hopefully, as it appeared many guys started to get their bats going again.

Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh, two guys who have struggled of late, whacked back-to-back, solo home runs in the 6th inning on Sunday. Further, Trea Turner also homered in the game, adding to a gaudy 10-for-17 at the plate with four extra-base hits and four RBI in the series as well.

That could be a good sign. Above all, it comes at a good time.

The Phillies begin a six-game road trip Tuesday at the rival Braves. From there, they’ll head to Kansas City to take on a Royals team that just dominated a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds.

Union Head to Leagues Cup Semis; Jose Martinez Transfer Complete

Since breaking from MLS play, the Union have been on fire in Leagues Cup. Philly hosted Mazatlán F.C. of Liga MX at Subaru Park on Saturday night for the Leagues Cup Quarterfinals, drawing 1-1. With the win in the shootout, the Union advance to the semifinals of the 2024 Leagues Cup.

Forward Mikael Uhre opened up the scoring for the U in the first half. In the second half, Mazatlán leveled the match in the 59th minute with a goal from Alonso Escoboza. After the draw in regulation, Philly converted four out of their five shots, with midfielder Jesús Bueno scoring the goal winning kick to move the Union to the round of four.

In fact, of the scorers in the shootout, Jose Martinez also tallied and it was more emotional than normal. Martinez, 30, is reportedly headed to Corinthians Paulista of Brazilian league Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in a transfer. So in other words, the Union are expected to receive around $2 million dollars for the sale, but that has not been made official.

Affectionally known as “Ej Brujo,” Martinez’s energy and grit will be sorely missed by the Union. His intensity on the pitch was a joy to watch in his time in Philadelphia. Likewise, Martinez’s time this summer with the Venezuela national football team at the Olympics may have shown many that the footballer was capable of competing in a higher tier league.

Additionally, we wish Martinez well in Brazil.

Guerschon Yabusele, Sixers Agree to Deal

Fresh off a sliver medal at the Olympic Games and dunking on Lebron James, French forward Guerschon Yabusele is signing a one-year deal with the Sixers, according to Shams Charania. Yabusele, 28, averaged 14 points per game throughout the Olympics and must’ve caught the eye of some NBA execs, as their was alleged interest in Yabusele making his NBA return. Most recently, Yabusele played for Real Madrid of the EuroLeague, where he averaged 10 points per-game.

In order to bring Yabusele’s buyout to completion with Real Madrid, Philly is paying a maximum of $850,000, per league rules, to acquire him.

Report: Eagles’ Becton, Dickerson Pick up Injuries

According to Jeff Kerr, the Eagles Right Guard position has absorbed some injuries at camp on Sunday. Kerr says that Mekhi Becton left practice with a right leg injury after completing some team drills. Guard Landon Dickerson, on the other hand, dealt with a knee aliment most of the practice of his own. Dickerson came off limping after a 1-on-1 rep with Milton Williams.

Also, the birds offensive line is already dealing with an injury to Tyler Steen. Steen, 24, was carted off the practice field with an ankle injury a few days ago.
