Report: Zach Wheeler is Done for Season

On Saturday, the Phillies provided another update on Zach Wheeler’s status. Philadelphia’s ace RHP has been diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) and will undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery in the coming weeks.

The expected timeline for recovery is six to eight months. There is a long road ahead for the 35-year-old, but perhaps in the best case scenario, we could see Wheeler pitch again for the Phillies next season between April and July. He may never reach his CY Young level again and with two years left on his contract, that could complicate things for a Phillies team hoping to contend. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there though.

Above all, his ability to return at all would be an impressive feat, that much is certain. We continue to wish Wheeler well in his recovery and hope to see him don the red pinstripes again.

Phillies, Twins to Play Field of Dreams Game in 2026

In lighter Phillies news, news broke Sunday that the Phillies will participate in next seasons’ Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa, according to Dan Haynes and Matt Gelb. Minnesota is expected to be the home team. The exact date for the game is being revealed when the 2026 MLB schedule comes out on Tuesday.

This is the third Field of Dreams Game on the site made famous by the movie and for my money, one of the most fun events MLB puts together. With the vintage uniforms and overall pageantry, the game always comes across well on TV, and feels true to the roots of baseball. This will be the first time in four years MLB will do a game there, but I always felt it should be a yearly deal. Similarly to what the NHL does with the Winter Classic, it’s always fun to see a sport played in a unique venue.

Eagles Trade for Sam Howell, Waive Thompson-Robinson

The Eagles were quite busy on Sunday. Firstly, the birds announced the acquisition of 24-year-old QB Sam Howell from the Vikings, along with a sixth-round draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Secondly, they waived Quarterback Dorian Robinson-Thompson and defensive back Lewis Cine. Later, the Eagles then announced they completed trades for backup tackle Fred Johnson (shown above) and is acquiring a 2027 sixth-round pick from the Packers in exchange for offensive tackle Darian Kennard, according to Adam Schefter.

This flurry of activity is not surprising. The birds have until the NFL’s Tuesday 4 PM deadline to finalize their 53-man roster. Of course, the Eagles will open their season on September 4th with the Dallas Cowboys and hang their championship banner.

It’s almost that time, folks!
