Ramos Roundup Part 56: Get Your “Phil”

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies Drop Series to Mets; What Now?

In our last writing, Nick Castellanos‘s walked off the Phillies in Game 2 and it appeared, all was right with the Philly’s NLDS hopes. When the series shifted to New York, however, things went south quickly in Games’ 3 and 4. Capsulated by a Francisco Lindor Grand Slam, a season that began so promising ended with such a whimper. Now, it begs the question; where do we go from here?

The numbers this Phillies lineup posted were alarming. A combined .186 average at the plate, lowlighted a number of poor performances. JT Realmuto was an abysmal 0-for-11 at the dish, while Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh were only able to mustered one hit in 13 at-bats in this series. Not to mention Philly relievers allowing their ERA to balloon to 11.37 in the four games.

We can spare ourselves the excuse that a bye to the divisional round had any effect on the Phillies. The Guardians, Yankees and Dodgers made it into the championship series and they also had a bye.

This Phillies club is aging, expensive and clearly not good enough and some wholesale changes to the lineup should be forthcoming this winter.

We’ll see what happens.

Eagles Edge Browns 20-16

AJ Brown and Devonta Smith each caught a touchdown in the Eagles 20-16 win on Sunday. It wasn’t pretty, but the birds didn’t turnover the football which was a step in the right direction for the group. Still, there remains plenty to clean up. The Eagles are still in search of some first quarter points, as Philly has not scored yet in the opening stanza of a game yet this season.

Also, did anyone notice Nick Sirianni arguing with fans in the clip above? Weird way to deal with your home fans after a less than stellar performance against the cellar-dwelling Browns.

Preseason P

Despite dropping a preseason matchup to the Celtics on Saturday, Sixers newcomer Paul George made his debut with the squad on Friday. George went 8-for-15 from the field and scored a team-high 23 points in the game, including four 3-pointers, six rebounds and two assists.

It was nice to see George get some work in and look good doing so. For more on George and the Sixers, be sure to listen to the new Drunk on the Court episode.

Flyers Split Opening Weekend

The Flyers opened their season late Friday night in Vancouver with a 3-2 shootout win. Tyson Foerster and Cam York scored for Philly in regulation before Morgan Frost won the game in the skills competition. Sam Ersson was excellent in the game as well, stopping 24 pucks on 26 Canuck shots.

On Saturday, the Flyers traveled to Calgary, but weren’t nearly as successful. A 6-3 loss at the hands of the Flames was the result with goals from Travis Konecny (2X) and Joel Farabee. Rookie sensation Matvei Michkov also picked up his first career point on Konecny’s second tally and in reality, could have a bushel of points already based on how many plays he’s made already.

Michkov and the Flyers will return to action on Tuesday when they head to Edmonton to take on the Oilers.
