Ramos Roundup Part 34: Finishing the Story

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Flyers Skid Hits Seven: Playoff Berth on Life Support

The Flyers continued their slide out of playoff positioning with back to back losses to the Buffalo Sabers and Columbus Blue Jackets over the weekend. As of this writing, Philly trails the Islanders by two points and the Detroit Red Wings by one point in the Eastern Conference Wildcard race.

What more can be said?

The Flyers have been abysmal over the last couple of weeks. Perhaps a combination of fatigue, the grueling “gauntlet” against some of the East’s elite, and perhaps just an overall lack of talent is at the crux of the downfall. Mathematically speaking, Philly is very much alive, but this weekend felt like the swan song for the team. The orange and black have just four games remaining.

Charlie O’Conner of All PHLY detailed in his latest piece, dissecting the current frustration. You read that here.

Kelce, Johnson Make Special Appearance at WrestleMania

Is there a more match-made in heaven then Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson and professional wrestling? The Eagles offensive linemen helped out a fellow legend in Rey Mysterio. A fun little crossover for those who enjoy the squared circle and gridiron!

Perhaps the WWE is waiting for an opportunity to offer Kelce and Johnson contracts? They sure looked like naturals out there.

Phillies Take Two of Three From Nationals

Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto got the Fightins offense going in the Phillies weekend series with the Nationals. Philly did drop the finale, but got some key pitching performances from Aaron Nola and Ranger Suarez. Nola, in particular, made a bit of franchise history.

According to Phillies Notes, Nola has moved into sole possession of 4th place in Phillies franchise history with 1,586 career strikeouts. The 30 year-old Ace now trails only Steve Carlton (3,031), Robin Roberts (1,871) and Cole Hamels (1,844). Impressive stuff from the much maligned Phillies pitcher.

Union Stay Unbeaten with 2-1 Win Over Nashville

Speaking of history, the Union may have some of their own very soon. Not only did the boys in blue pick up the win in Nashville on Saturday, but Daniel Gazdag is set to make some franchise history over the next few games. Sitting second to only Sebastian Le Toux, Gazdag will have a chance to set a new watermark for Union goal scorers over the next few games. We’re officially on Gazdag watch over the next few Union games, folks.

The Union travel to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to play Atlanta United FC on next Sunday, April 14.

Maxey Drops Career 52 Points in Win

Tyrese Maxey put on a show in a back and forth contest win for the Sixers against the San Antonio Spurs Sunday night. The game ended after two overtime frames and Philly was without the services of Joel Embiid, Kyle Lowry and Tobias Harris.

With the win, the Sixers will leapfrog the Miami Heat into the Eastern Conference’s seventh seed. Philly continue to take aim at the Indiana Pacers in the sixth seed and furthermore, avoid the play-in.
