Ramos Roundup Part 73: From the Pitch to the Pitches

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Union Double Up Orlando City 4-2 in Season Opener

On Saturday, the Union kicked off the 2025 MLS season with a 4-2 win over Orlando City SC. Philly saw Tai Baribo (2g), Daniel Gazdag and Mikhael Uhre all score in the win, while Quinn Sullivan, Frankie Westfield and Kai Wagner (2a) provided the service.

According to the club, the four tally’s tied the franchise marker for most goals scored in a season opener; in 2023, the boys in blue took down the Columbus Crew by a score of 4-1 as well.

The Union will host their home opener against FC Cincinnati at Subaru Park next Saturday. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on Apple TV.

Phillies Open Spring Training with Tigers, Orioles in Weekend Slate

Baseball is back! Like the Union, the Phillies got their spring training schedule underway this past weekend. The fightins ended up losing both games to the Tigers and Orioles, but did see productive outings for some of the team’s regulars. The Phils ended up jumping out to a five run lead on Saturday before Detroit took over. Likewise, Byson Stott, Johan Rojas and Max Kepler all picked up hits.

Subsequently, on Sunday, Tyler Phillips started for the Phillies and allowed three runs in two innings of work. The recently signed Christian Arroyo hit a solo home run in a 7-3 loss.

Sixers Stumble Late against Nets

The Sixers suffered their seventh consecutive loss on Saturday. Nic Claxton hit the buzzer beater after a half-hearted effort by Paul George on the rebound. Philly is now 20-36 on the season, good for 12th place in the conference this year.

There’s not much else to say about this group these days; they are likely better off shutting down any player with nagging injuries or gives them the best chance to win and simply play for their draft lottery odds at this point. The 2024-2025 season has been a unmitigated disaster.
