In yet another yet dramatic match, the Union found a way to advance to the round of 16 in Concacf Champions Cup play on Tuesday night. It’s just the third time Philadelphia has advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 in club history. Let’s take a closer look.
Quinn Sullivan Shines Again
Picking up a goal and an assist, Union wunderkind Quinn Sullivan continued his great play creation in the win. In his post-game presser, head coach Jim Curtin said the 19-year old midfielder finishes off scoring plays in training at as high of a rate as any player on the club. In watching him perform again Tuesday, you can certainly see his sublime offensive skills on the pitch.
Uhre, the Hero
With his second goal in as many games, Mikael Uhre hit the back of the net in extra time to help the Union advance in this one. The sequence began with a well-placed corner kick from Jack McGlynn before then chaos ensued in the box. The ball found it’s way to a wide open Uhre, which you can see above.
Elliott, Lowe Shown Red Cards; Won’t Play Against Pachuca
Philly outlasted Saprissa in a 120 minute marathon, but did so at a cost. The boys in blue will now be down both Jack Elliott and Damion Lowe due to red cards for their showdown with Pachuca on March 5th. The expectation is that their will be some lineup shuffling on Saturday to account for this, but it makes these tough matches that much more difficult for the Union. We’ll see how they respond.
They Said it
Jim Curtin on the Union’s lack of detail defensively: “I think our group has really big heart, big character and big guts, but all of us had small brains in this game. We made it really hard on ourselves when we didn’t’ have to.”
On Deck
With tonight’s result against Deportivo Saprissa, the Union will host the first leg of the series against C.F. Pachuca on Tuesday, March 5th at Subaru Park with kickoff set for 7PM ET. However, before then in MLS play, the boys in blue head to Kansas City to take on Sporting KC on Saturday night.
