Despite peppering Predators’ goaltender Juuse Saros with 40 shots on goal, Filip Forsberg scored 18 seconds into overtime to snap the Flyers four game win streak. It was an entertaining game, one that Philly seemingly was in charge of for large chunks of the contest. Let’s wrap:
The All Important First Goal
A trend that’s continued to pop up throughout this season, is the Flyers night-and-day record when it comes to the games first goal. Not necessarily a news bulletin at this point in the season, but the Flyers remain winless when they surrender the first goal in a game.
Gustav Nyquist scored the game-opening goal for Nashville. The goal made for 17 first period tallies this season for the Preds and they are tied for the third most among all teams behind the Canucks and Penguins (both with 19), according to NHL stats.
Despite this, the Flyers played a pretty strong game and created a bushel of chances. It just happened to be one of those nights for them where the opposing goaltender was fantastic.
Couturier’s Big Night
Leading the charge for Philadelphia was Sean Couturier. The 31-year-old collected a goal and an assist in the loss, and hasn’t appeared to have lost a step after missing two years of hockey. Couturier remains a high-end two-way stalwart at this point and that’s incredibly encouraging news for Philly. He now has 21 points in 26 games played on the yea .
Did You Know?
According to NHL stats, Travis Sanheim collected his 40th career goal in this one and has now tied Kim Johnsson for the ninth most by a Flyers defenseman in Flyers.
On Deck
The Flyers return home on Thursday, when they welcome Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals to the Wells Fargo Center for a 7:00 puck drop.
