Ramos Roundup Part 99: Sweat it Out

The Ramos roundup is a weekly sports column highlighting all the news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Eagles Win Wild One in Tampa Bay 31-25

In the sweltering Florida heat, the Eagles stayed a perfect 4-0 this season with their win over the Buccaneers on Sunday. The birds came out flying in the contest after a slow start a week ago, as Cameron Latu blocked a punt and Sydney Brown scooped it up and returned it 35 yards for the touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. Later, Philly would post two first half scores on short shovel passes from Jalen Hurts to Dallas Goedert.

However, Tampa Bay stormed back into the game in the second half. The Bucs erased a 21-point Eagles lead behind some big plays from Baker Mayfield, Emeka Egbuka and Bucky Irving. As a result, Tampa would have a chance to tie the game on Philadelphia’s 11 yard line. With 7:57 left in regulation, rookie Jihaad Campbell forces his second turnover of the game, intercepting Baker Mayfield in the end zone.

The Eagles took over with less than eight minutes remaining to finish the game. It wasn’t always pretty, just as it wasn’t last week. It’s hard to argue success though so they’ll take it and run to week 5 against the Broncos.

Union Break Club Records in Dominant Win

The Union picked up a dominant 6-0 win in our nationals capital Saturday night. The boys in blue match a club record with their 19th win of the season and additionally, secure another club record with their eighth road win. The Union drew first blood on D.C. United in the17th minute, when forward Bruno Damiani found the back of the net. Midfielder Indiana Vassilev scored twice in the win, while United also had an own goal in the 34th minute to help build the Philly lead.

Forward Milan Iloski would score in the 49th minute before Philadelphia secured their victory in the 62nd minute with a final tally from forward Mikael Uhre.

The Union return to Subaru Park to face New York City FC on Saturday, October 4th, in their final home match of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Apple TV.

Phillies Walk Off Regular Season Finale

Nick Castellanos’ sacrifice fly to center field in the 10th inning gives the Phils their 96th win of the season on Sunday. Philadelphia is now firmly focused on the NLDS, which begins on next Saturday. The Phils will meet either the Dodgers or Reds in that series.

All in all, it’s been a fun season for this team. Kyle Schwarber’s 56 home run season is surely to fetch some MVP votes at the years end. The much maligned Trea Turner won the National League batting title, the first Phillie to do so since Richie Ashburn in 1958.

However, the Phillies are to be ultimately judged with how they perform in these playoffs. The group, while talented, is another year older and one has to wonder how many more cracks they will get at a World Series together.

We’ll see how they fare next weekend.
