Eagles Defeat Dallas on Banner Night; Sign Za’Darius Smith
On Thursday, the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles took the the field against the Cowboys. The birds reigned victorious over their rival 24-20 thanks to a quality effort from Jalen Hurts. The Super Bowl LX MVP threw for just 152 yards, but used his legs effectively, rushing 14 times for 62 yards and two touchdowns.
Of course, the game’s beginning offered plenty of drama when Philly defensive lineman Jalen Carter was ejected before the first offensive snap of the game after spitting on Dak Prescott. Alternate angles later showed that words were exchanged and Prescott also spit in the general direction of Carter. Nevertheless, Carter needs to be smarter here. In my view, it doesn’t matter what was said in the heat of the moment. His choice put the Eagles in a bind and had they lost, he likely would faced even more backlash then he has already.
In other Eagles news, the club bolstered their pass rush, signing veteran defensive end Za’Darius Smith. The three-time Pro Bowler is replacing fullback Ben VanSumeren on the roster, as VanSumeren suffered a knee injury on Thursday and is headed to injury reserve.
Flyers, Sixers Unveil “New” Xfinity Mobile Arena
The Flyers and Sixers unveiled the new-branding for Xfinity Mobile Arena this past Tuesday. Flyers captain Sean Couturier and Travis Sanheim were on-hand for the unveiling, along with Sixers’ youngsters Jared McCain and VJ Edgecombe. For more on the event, click here.
Union to Host U.S. Men’s National Team Match
On Saturday, the Union announced that Subaru Park will host the U.S. Men’s National Team on Saturday, November 15, when the team takes on Paraguay ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be nationally broadcast on TNT, HBO Max, Telemundo, Universo, Peacock, and Westwood One Sports (radio).
It’s been seven years since the USMNT last played at Subaru Park. It is a fond memory for Josh Sargent, Tim Weah and Walker Zimmerman, all of whom scored their first international goals in the USA’s 3-0 clean sheet against Bolivia on May 28, 2018.
The USMNT has a 4W-2L-2D record against Paraguay. The last time the two clubs met was in March of 2018. It was a 1-0 clean sheet victory for team USA.
Turner Picks up Knock in Phillies Loss to Marlins
The Phillies couldn’t complete the 3-game sweep on Sunday, but received far more damaging news post-game. Trea Turner, arguably the Phils MVP this season, left Sunday’s game in the 7th inning with a hamstring strain. The National League leader in hits is expected to have an MRI when the Phillies return home. If you remember, Turner also missed six weeks due to a hamstring ailment last season.
Further, think what this could mean for the Phillies’ stretch drive; without Turner, they lose a valuable piece to a lineup, but also his NL leading batting average. It could also allow the Mets an opportunity to sneak back into the divisional race should he miss the remainder of the season.
The Phillies are catching serious injuries at the worse time to key players. It’s unfortunate for a team that’s has championship aspirations. We’ll see how they handle it moving forward.
