Phillies Salvage Series with 2-1 Win Over Padres
Christopher Sanchez went seven inning, striking out six San Diego hitters in the Phillies final game before the All Star Break. Veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto would slap the second double of the inning, scoring Bryce Harper, and giving the Phillies a 2-1 lead in the process. Later, Matt Strahm would close the game out, despite walking the lead-off hitter in the ninth inning.
With the win, the Phillies reclaim 1st place in the NL East. They’ll continue to battle with the Mets for first place the rest of the season. However, the next key order of business for Philly is the MLB trade deadline.
Among the club’s needs is outfield help and adding a high leverage reliever. They’ve been connected to Emmanuel Classe and Steven Kwan, in addition to a slew of other names. It comes down to cost for Dave Dombrowski and the Phils; will they be willing to part with a coveted prospect such as Andrew Painter, Aidan Miller or Justin Crawford? I suppose that’ll come down to how close the club feels they are to a championship.
Nevertheless, it should be interesting to see on July 31st.
Union Shut out Red Bulls 2-0
The Union got back to their winning ways on Saturday night, with a 2-0 clean sheet victory over the Red Bulls. Midfielder Indiana Vassilev opened the scoring in the 9th minute, finishing off a corner from defender Kai Wagner.
Later, Bruno Damiani scored again for the boys in blue in the 24th minute, while Goalkeeper Andre Blake earned his fifth clean sheet of the season.
According to MLS Communications, Philly is extending their regular season unbeaten run to 12 games with the win against the Bulls, marking the longest unbeaten run against a single team in club history.
The Union return to the pitch on Wednesday, July 16th, when they host CF Montreal. The game will be broadcast on Apple TV, MLS Season pass. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
