Suarez, Phillies Clip Braves 2-1 to Win Series
Ranger Suarez turned in seven quality innings, striking eight hitters, while Trea Turner and Otto Kemp had RBIs in the Phillies 2-1 series-clinching victory over the Braves Sunday. Matt Straham picked up the save. Suarez, in particular, has been quite good for some time now, with a 1.17 ERA since May 10, according to the broadcast. That earned run average is best in the majors over that span.
Philadelphia is now 49-35 on the season and holds a 1.5-game lead over the New York Mets for 1st place in the NL East. The Mets have been in total free-fall mode of late so it’s imperative to come up with these in-division victories to distance themselves from the pack.
The Phillies will head home and play host to the visiting San Diego Padres Monday evening at Citizens Bank Ball Park. First pitch is scheduled or 6:35 p.m.
Martone, Nesbitt Highlight Flyers Draft Weekend
The Flyers completed their draft process late Saturday afternoon and walked away with an intriguing crop of prospects. With the 6th overall pick on Friday, the Flyers selected hulking winger Porter Martone out of Brampton of the OHL. Martone, 18, possesses all the skills and leadership qualities of a franchise player at the next level. The Flyers got one here.
Later in the draft, the orange and black opted to trade picks 22 and 31 to the Penguins for pick 12 to select centremen Jack Nesbitt out of Winsdor. Nesbitt was selected higher than many public rankings projected to go in this draft. However, the Flyers must have valued his size (he’s 6’4″) and hockey sense. His skating needs work, but should somewhat correct itself as he grows into his body. For more on Nesbitt, click here.
The rest of the draft played out for Flyers as followed:
Sixers Johni Broome in Second Round of NBA Draft
After selecting VJ Edgecombe on Wednesday, the Sixers welcomed big man Johni Broome to the organization on day 2 of the NBA Daft. Broome, a five-year player out of Auburn, is known for his rebounding skills and general compete level. No one will mistake Broome for the fastest player or the one with the crazy athleticism. He is, however, powerful and a tone setter who will always give maximum effort.
All in all, that’s a win for the Sixers in the second round.
