Ramos Roundup Part 81: Return of the Ranger

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Suarez Makes Debut; Phils Drop Series Finale

Ranger Suarez returned to the mound for the first time this season, but wasn’t able to pick up the win on Sunday. Suarez was cruising in the contest through the first two innings before getting roughed up in innings three and four. He was ultimately charged with seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work. He also struck out six and walked two batters as well.

Despite this, having Suarez back in the mix is a good thing for the Phillies. It allows Philly to move Taijuan Walker to the bullpen, perhaps providing some depth there after a rough start to the season for them.

Nevertheless, the Phillies ended up rallying in the ninth against Shelby Miller before falling in extras.

Philly is off Monday before beginning a six game road trip in Tampa Bay.

Union Stay Hot; Defeat CF Montréal 2-1

Midfielder Indiana Vassilev and striker Mikael Uhre each scored at Stade Saputo to give the Union their straight victory on Saturday night. This is the first time since September of 2020 that Philly picked up a victory in Montréal.

Bradley Carnell’s squad has really been surprising this season. With 22 points complied so far, they are in second place in the Eastern Conference behind Columbus.

The Union will return to action on Wednesday, May 7th, to host Indy Eleven in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Paramount+.

NHL Announces Draft Lottery Date; Flyers at Worlds

This past week, the NHL announced the official date for the NHL draft lottery. Of course, this is of significance for the Flyers since they are projected to own the fourth overall pick in the up-coming draft in June. According to NHL.com Columnist Nick Cotsonika, it’ll be the first time in the 30-year-history of the NHL Draft Lottery that the drawing will be shown live in-studio. Moreover, you can watch the countdown show tonight at 7 p.m. EST on ESPN or Sportsnet in Canada.

Conversely, the Flyers also announced this past week that Travis Konecny, Travis Sanheim and Tyson Foerster are joining team Canada at the IIHF World Championship this month. In fact, this will be Foerster’s first opportunity to represent his nation in his pro career. The tournament begins on Friday, May 9th in Stockholm, Sweden.
