Ramos Roundup Part 79: Don’t Cry Because It’s Over…

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies Drop 2-of-3 with Cardinals in the Lou

On Sunday, the Phillies had Zach Wheeler take the mound in an opportunity to win the series with the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Phils dropped the game and the series with a lopsided 7-0 loss though. It is the second time in three days the Phillies offense sputtered and were shutout as well.

Perhaps no one struggled as much as Brandon Marsh and Alec Bohm though. Both players are a combined 0-for-26 at the plate in their last few games and it’s definitely putting stress on the lineup. At this point, it is too early to panic, but let’s officially consider this mildly concerning?

The Phillies return home on Monday to play host to the San Francisco Giants for a four-game series. First pitch is tentatively set for 6:45 p.m.

Sixers Stampeded by Bulls in Season Finale 122-102

The Sixers wrapped up their season from hell on Sunday, dropping yet another decision to the Chicago Bulls. Lonnie Walker IV matches a career-high in 31 points in the loss, while Adem Bona continued his strong play as well. Philly will end their 2024-2025 campaign a miserable 24-58 on the season, woefully falling short of the expectations set for them heading into this year.

After a post-game press conference, Daryl Morey announced that he and head coach Nick Nurse will return to the team next year so we’ll see what happens to the roster this summer and beyond.

Union trade Daniel Gazdag to Columbus

On Friday, the Union announced that they have acquired a guaranteed $4,000,000 from Columbus in exchange for Daniel Gazdag in a shocking move. Additionally, the club acquires $500,000 if certain performances metrics are met as well.

Gazdag recorded 59 goals, 31 assists, 217 shots in 125 total appearances (115 starts) over five regular seasons. The 29-year-old set MLS career highs in games played and started (34), goals (22) and minutes played (2,939) during the 2022 regular season. He is club’s all-time leading scorer too.

Obviously, this is quite the haul for Gazdag. In the immediate term it doesn’t help the club, as questions still remain if Philly will be committing that cash to improve the first team.

In other news, the boys in blue dropped a 1-0 decision to NYFC on Saturday. New York’s Alonso Martínez scored the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute.

The Union will return to Subaru Park to play Atlanta United FC on Saturday, April 19. The match will began at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcasting on Apple TV.

Flyers Fall to Senators in Overtime

In the second leg of a back to back, the Flyers fall to the Ottawa Senators on Sunday. The club picked up goals from Nicolas Deslauriers, Noah Cates and Garnet Hathaway in the loss. Ivan Fedotov made 21 saves on 25 shots in goal.

The Flyers have just two games remaining in their season; a home matchup with the Blue Jackets on Tuesday and a road date in Buffalo on Thursday.

This past weekend, I joined Jesse Bell and the Flyers Alley podcast to discuss all things orange and black. You can hear that show here.
