The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.
Eagles Release CB Darius Slay
News broke this past week that the Eagles would be releasing cornerback Darius Slay. Slay, 34, has spent the last five years with Philadelphia, becoming a valued member of the Eagles’ top pass defense in two of those seasons.
Of course, his departure wouldn’t be without some drama though. Slay went on a podcast and ruffled some feathers with comments regarding not naming CJ Gardner-Johnson among the Eagles’ secondary leaders and not naming Jalen Hurts among the top quarterbacks in the league.
You can see that clip here.
Despite the stir on the comments, I found it to be much ado about nothing. Slay is entitled to his opinions and is a champion here. The comments didn’t seem malicious, at least to me.
How do you feel, Eagles fans?
Union Begin Season 3-0 for First Time in History
The Union picked up a 2-0 win against the New England Revolution Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. This is the first time in club history the Union have won the first three matches of a season. Tai Baribo and newcomer Jovan Lukic scored the goals for Philadelphia.
In addition to the club history, Baribo also made some MLS history as well. According to MLS PR, Baribo tied Ante Razov (6 in 1999) for the most goals scored through the first three games of a season in league history.
This beginning to the season has been a pleasant surprise. The boys in blue return home to face Nashville SC on Sunday afternoon.
Sixers Clip Jazz 126-122
In a battle of the tanking teams, the Sixers picked up a victory against the Jazz on Sunday. Lonnie Walker and Quentin Grimes each had 25 points in the win.
Obviously, both teams would have rather improve their lottery odds and lose at this point, but feel-good moments have been few and far between this basketball season in Philadelphia.
Flyers Losing Streak Hits Four in 3-1 loss to Devils
Jamie Drysdale scored the Flyers lone goal in their fourth consecutive home loss on Sunday. Ivan Fedotov made 20 saves as well.
