The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.
Phillies Acquire Jesús Luzardo from Marlins
The Phillies picked up a valuable arm in a trade with the Miami Marlins Sunday in Jesus Luzardo, according to Robert Murray. Philly also acquired minor League catcher/outfielder Paul McIntosh from the Marlins as well and sent Shortstop Starlyn Caba (No. 4 prospect) and outfielder Emaarion Boyd (No. 23 prospect) the other way.
The left-handed Luzardo should bolster an already deep starting rotation for the Phillies. The 27-year-old Luzardo will likely be competing with Tajuan Walker for the final starting rotation spot. Luzardo will join OF Max Kepler as the lone off-season additions by the Phillies this winter.
Union Acquire Center Back Ian Glavinovich
On Friday, Union announced that they have acquired center back Ian Glavinovich from Newell’s Old Boys on a one-year loan. Philly will also have a club option on the player to permanently transfer him things go well. Glavinovich is expected to be added to the Union’s active roster following receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa and will occupy an international roster slot, according to the team.
Glavinovich, 23, has been playing for CA Newell’s of Argentine Primera Division since 2022. He has made 30 total appearances for the Old Boys, logging one assist in that time.
Sixers Split Weekend Back to Back with Hornets, Cavaliers
The Sixers picked up a win Friday night against the Hornets, but fell to the league-leading Cavaliers the following night. In the matchup with the Hornets, Joel Embiid made his return to the lineup after a sinus fracture injury and scored 20 points. Tyrese Maxey (23 points) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (22) followed suit in the win as well.
On Saturday, however, Philly wasn’t as up for the challenge in Cleveland. Despite Maxey getting a team-high 27 points, the Sixers couldn’t contain the talented duo of Darius Garland and Evan Mobley.
The Sixers are now 9-17 this season.
After 10 Straight Wins, Eagles Fall to Commanders 36-33
Despite forcing five turnovers, the Eagles took their first loss in quite some time on Sunday in Washington thanks to a late touchdown by Jalen Daniels. Of course, the concern is less about the result and more about the health of quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts scrambled during a play on the Eagles second series and went to slide after a 13-yard gain. The Eagles QB collided with Frankie Luvu’s helmet with his head hitting the turf.
As Hurts got to his feet, he looked slightly off-balanced and the look in his eyes immediately got the attention from officials and concussion spotters. He was ruled out with concussion shortly thereafter and Kenny Pickett finished the game.
With just two games left in the season, it may be wise to allow Hurts to step away over the final leg of the year and make a full recovery. The lowly Cowboys and Giants are the two team left on the docket and the Eagles should have no issues defeating them, even without Hurts. Don’t expose the franchise quarterback to further injury.
Just my two cents here.
