The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.
Eagles Dominate Cowboys 34-6
The Eagles picked up their fifth straight win Sunday over their arch-rival Cowboys. Jalen Hurts finished the day 14-of-20 for 202 yards, two touchdowns and one interception and added 56 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on the ground.
With Dak Prescott sidelined, backup Cooper Rush struggled, completing 13-of-23 passes for just 45 yards (2.0 yards per attempt).
The win makes Thursday night’s matchup back in Philly with the Washington Commanders a pivotal one in the NFC East race.
Union Fire Jim Curtin
On Thursday, the Union dropped a bomb on the fútbol world when they announced that the club have parted ways with Jim Curtin. Curtin, who was named head coach of the Union in 2014, took the club to their first MLS Cup final appearance in 2022 after a record-setting season.
To many Union supporters, the coach is taking the fall for the front office’s ineptitude here. It’s hard to argue when you look at what Curtin has done with what he’s been given. According to U.S. soccer correspondent Jeff Carlisle, sources close to the situation have said Curtin is incredibly well-liked among players, but the same cannot be said for those in upper management. Of course, this makes the decision so much more perplexing as to why the Union would begin a club makeover with relieving such a well-liked coach.
Nevertheless, I wish Jim well in the future. This season was my first covering the Union and Curtin couldn’t have been a better person to the media. His candor and openness when addressing the Union’s struggles on the pitch was always appreciated. I have no doubt he’ll land on his feet.
Flyers Get Three Points in Florida Trip: Michkov Sits
The Flyers finished their three-game road set with three points after back to backs shootouts. Standout rookie Matvei Michkov was a healthy scratch for both games and that drew ire of many fans. To me, that’s understandable at this point, as Michkov is a key character in the Flyers rebuild and the more he plays, the quicker he can pick up the NHL pace.
John Tortorella has long preferred the benching method of “player development.” Not every player may benefit from that though and players of Michkov’s pedigree tend to be uber competitors who can motivate themselves.
Will this bump in the road hinder Michkov’s development? Doubtful, but it does seem unnecessary. One would imagine Michkov would return to the lineup on Monday at home against the Sharks.
McCain, Sixers Hurdle Hornets in Overtime
The Sixers picked up their second win of the season late Sunday night 107-105. Rookie Jared McCain led the way, posting 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting, while Guerschon Yabusele picked up 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting.
The Sixers entered the game 1-7 so it really doesn’t matter how they got this one done. A win is a win, especially since little has gone right for the Sixers so far this year.
