Ramos Roundup part 6: What’s Old is Now New Again

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Kelly Green is Back!

Set to be available for purchase at the pro shop on Monday at Lincoln Financial Field, the Eagles released photos of their new throwback Kelly green uniforms over the weekend. For fans like me, the Kelly-green uniforms fulfill a nostalgic purpose, but to be honest, not much else. Don’t get me wrong, bringing them back was the right call by the team; they’re going to sell many of them, and fans seem to be incredibly excited. The design and color scheme have always been sleek and it’s a nice nod to yesteryear.

However, some of the most consistently good football in Eagles history has been played in the midnight green uniforms. Really dating back to the Reid/McNabb era, the team has found the most sustainable success they’ve ever had wearing midnight green and of course, have won a Super Bowl in them. Kelly green, while fun as an alternate uniform, is associated with nostalgia. The midnight green though? That’s associated with winning.

The Sixers Own Siakam?

Earlier this week, Paul Reed revealed that new coach Nick Nurse has plans to mold him into an into a Pascal Siakam-type player for the Sixers. Siakam, 29, has been a two-way, All-NBA caliber player and one of the league’s most versatile in the last few seasons. I’m not sure if Reed has that kind of upside, but it’s clear Nurse wants to look at internal options and see what he can do with them. That doesn’t seem like a bad strategy for a first coach inheriting a group that, at times, underachieves.

Phillies Drop 2-of-3 in Pittsburgh with Trade Deadline Looming

In one of the poorer managerial jobs we’ve seen this season, Rob Thomson helped the Phils drop the most infuriating deciding game of a series that you’ll find all year.

Cristopher Sanchez was cruising through five innings with a no-hitter for the Phillies, before Thomson yanked the pitcher from the game. The Phillies bullpen was not able to close out the game and the club eventually lost in extra innings courtesy of a Josh Palacios homerun. The decision to pull Sanchez was nonsensical by Thomson. The move cost his team a series that hopefully won’t hurt them too much as they jockey for position in the NL wildcard race. A lot has been made of the struggles of Trea Turner (justified) and the like, but with how tight the Wildcard is, Thomson can’t introduce errors like that either.

The 2023 Major League Baseball trade deadline is Tuesday, August 1 at 6:00 PM. The Phillies have been tied to players such as, Adam Duvall, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Tommy Pham, to name a few. Perhaps one of these players can give the Phils the necessary jolt needed to get across the finish line and into the post-season for the second consecutive season.

Gazdag’s Hattrick Powers Union Past Queretaro in League Cup Group Play

With the win, the Union secured the No. 1 spot in East Group 1 in the league cup. Next up will be Philly’s Eastern Conference rival D.C. United on Thursday. Thursday’s contest will be the second meeting of 2023 between the Union and D.C. The two clubs played to a scoreless draw back in May.
