The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.
Short on Weapons, Eagles Crushed by Buccaneers 33-16
After getting gashed by Tampa for 445 total net yards and 29 first downs, the Eagles were punished by the Buccaneers on Sunday to fall to 2-2. Of course, the birds were without key offensive performers’ Lane Johnson, A.J. Brown (hamstring) and DeVonta Smith (concussion). Even so, that doesn’t justify allowing Tampa Bay the football for 36 minutes in possession time, in addition to the zero net yards and zero first downs on offense in six first-quarter plays.
Through the first month of the season, it’s been a mix bag for the Eagles. At least we have Saquon Barkley, am I right?
They’ll head out on the bye week next week and then will play host to the Cleveland Browns.
Phillies Finish 2024 Campaign with 95 Wins
Aaron Nola picked up his 14th win of the season, while Kyle Schwarber and Weston Wilson each knocked in two runs to finish up the MLB season for the Phillies. The Phils’ 95 wins is the teamβs highest since winning 102 games in 2011, but the second half of the season certainly had it’s ups and downs. Despite this, Philadelphia still spent 129 days in first place this season, according to Baseball Reference and have earned their place as the National League’s second best team behind the Dodgers.
As of this writing, the wildcard bracket is not set, but will be determined between the Mets, Braves and Diamondbacks on Monday.
The National League Division Series will get started on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Matevi Michkov Shines in Flyers Preseason Win
The Flyers picked up a preseason, overtime win on Saturday night over the Boston Bruins and normally, that wouldn’t be very newsworthy. However, the club’s wunderkind Matevi Michkov is hitting the ground running to begin his career in North America and that is certainly exciting. Michkov, 19, picked up two goals including the game winning goal on Saturday and has appeared to already earn the adulation of his teammates.
Take for example, Sean Couturier sticking up for the young player after some Bruins player gave him some rough treatment. It’s this kind of camaraderie and how the Flyers have embraced Michkov that’s made these games feel more important.
The Flyers will run it back with the Bruins in Boston on Monday night.
