Ramos Roundup part 5: The “Here” is All we Have

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Joel Talks Championship in Philly……or Anywhere else

It’s been exactly zero weeks this summer without nonsense for Sixers fans. Earlier last week, Maverick Carter sat down with Joel Embiid to discuss a litany of topics. Most importantly, Embiid was asked about what was next for himself after being recognized as the NBA’s most valuable player in 2023. His answer was puzzling.

“I just want to win a championship. Whatever it takes. I don’t know where that’s going to be. Whether it’s Philly or anywhere else. I just want to have a chance to accomplish that.”

This comment drew the ire of the Sixers fan base, and for good reason. Here’s the thing: there is no ‘anywhere else’ for Sixers fans. For a player – but especially a star caliber player of Embiid’s magnitude – to make a comment like that coming off a playoff performance in which he had 15 points in an embarrassing game 7 loss in Boston is tone deaf. We can chalk it up to a momentary lack of judgement, frustration or maybe even his not-so-subtle way of putting some pressure on the Sixers front office to put some better talent around him. He’s entitled to that. But it doesn’t make the comment any less frustrating. Pair this with the never-ending saga regarding the status of James Harden which we’ve ad nauseam here, it’s made a mess of a Sixers off-season.

Phillies Recommend Tommy John Surgery for Prized Prospect Painter

In a really rough turn of events, 6-foot-7 RHP prospect Andrew Painter is expected to undergo Tommy surgery, according to Phillies Nation. Painter, 20, was the No. 13 overall pick in 2021 out of a Ft. Lauderdale high school. R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports had Painter as the 13th best prospect in baseball at the begining of this season.

Union Pick Up 3-1 Win over Club Tijuana in League Cup Play

Julian Carranza tallied twice for Philly, while Daniel Gazdag a goal of his own in the Union’s opening League Cup matchup on Saturday. Philly will return to action on Wednesday, when they face-off against Querétaro F.C.

Eagles Set to Open Camp on Tuesday

After months of washing away a painstaking defeat in Super Bowl LVII, we’re now just one day away from rookies and veterans reporting to the NovaCare Complex for Eagles Training Camp. The team will host their first practice at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. For a full rundown of the birds’ summertime schedule, click this.

Rejoice, Philly! Football is back!
