Ramos Roundup Part 49: Should We Be Concerned?

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies Snap 6-Game Slide in Seattle

Kyle Schwarber, Bryson Stott, Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm all homered, while Zack Wheeler pitched eight scoreless innings as the Phils beat the Mariners 6-0 on Sunday, snapping a six-game losing streak. Wheeler was particularly excellent, allowing just two hits and striking out nine hitters in his longest outing of the season.

Despite the win, the Fightins NL East lead dropped to just 6 games after having a 11-game cushion over the Atlanta Braves. Philly is a paltry 5-13 in their last 18 games, not that the Braves have fared any better. Really since the Phillies trip to London, they have been quite mediocre with a few embarrassing losses against cellar dwellers sprinkled in as well.

Should we be concerned? It feels like we should be.

The Phillies will open a three-game series on Monday against the Dodgers, continuing a 10-game road trip for Philadelphia.

Eagles Fans Show Out at Open Practice

You know how they say our sense of smell is our strongest recall sense? When August rolls around, football is ruminating and there’s just something in the air that just means “football is back.” In Philadelphia, Eagles packed the Linc for the team’s open practice earlier in the week and the amount of people in attendance made some waves.

Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, and a host of others received raucous ovations at the event. For my money? Seeing Brandon Graham on his farewell tour in his final season in the league, and the ovation that he got, was really awesome. Hopefully, the Eagles as a club give the veteran defensive end a memorable season in his last.

Union Heading to Leagues Cup Round of 32; Another Addition Coming?

Sunday, the Union hosted Cruz Azul in their final group stage match of the 2024 Leagues Cup, drawing 1-1. With the tie, Philly led their group with four points to advance to the Leagues Cup Round of 32. Cruz Azul received a tally in the 41st minute from Carlos Rotondi. In the second half, the Union responded in the 88th minute when Daniel Gazdag netted his fifth career Leagues Cup goal.

In other U news, rumors have bubbled to the surface that Philly will like to add more talent during the current transfer window. According to José Roberto Nuñez, Midfielder Danley Jean Jacques is joining the Union from FC Metz in Ligue 2, France.

Are the Union expecting to lose some players during this transfer window? We’ll have to wait and see what happens as more news trickles out.

The Union host CF Montréal in the Leagues Cup Round of 32 on Friday, August 9. Time is to be announced.
