The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.
Sixers Knock Down Nets; Play-In Seeding Set
Despite getting quality contributions from Tyrese Maxey (26-3-3) and Tobias Harris (21-8-2) on Sunday, the Sixers received little help in avoiding the play-in tournament. Philly will play host to the Miami Heat on Wednesday night, with the winner taking on the New York Knicks in round one.
if the Sixers are getting a healthy Embiid here, they should be able to beat the Knicks in a first round. As the second seed in the East, the Kicks should be an extremely tough out, especially with home court. New York doesn’t posses a traditional star as we’ve come to know them, but guard Jalen Brunson has turned in a MVP quality effort this season. Ranked first in the league in 30 point, 10 assists games in 2024, the former Villanova Wildcat will be difficult to contain in a seven game series. Along with the newly acquired OG Anunoby, New York is 19-2 with the duo paired together.
However, Philly will have to beat the Heat first and would be wise to not overlook them.
Flyers Shutout Devils, Have Outside Shot For Playoffs
Travis Konecny tallied the lone goal and his 400th career point in the Flyers second consecutive win. Sam Ersson stopped 19 shots for the shutout as well. The orange and black have one game remaining this season so here’s the skinny how their playoff hopes play out:
- The Flyers must beat the Capitals on Tuesday night in their final regular season game.
- The Penguins and Capitals must finish 1-1-1 or 1-2 in their final games.
- The Red Wings must finish 1-2 in their final games.
Got all that? Someone check this math, as it is not my best subject.
Union Remain Undefeated in 2-2 Draw in Atlanta
Kai Wagner and Mikael Uhre buoyed another Union comeback to pick up a valuable standings point in Atlanta on Sunday. The boys in blue did not come away unscathed, however. Union goalkeeper Andre Blake left yet another game with a suspected lower body injury. Oliver Semmle came in relief. The Union trail the New York Red Bulls and Inter Miami by just two standings points. Philly will return to action on April 27th at Subaru Park.
Phillies Split 4-Game Set With Pirates
Lack of run of support once again prevented Zach Wheeler from picking up his first win of the season in the Phillies loss to the Pirates. Jack Suwinski hit a grand slam for Pittsburgh, while Mitch Keller delivered a sloid outing on the mound. The Phillies were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
The Rockies will make their way to Philadelphia next for a three game set with the Fightins.
Wayne Simmonds and Allen Iverson Honored
Wayne Simmonds and Allen Iverson were both honored by the Flyers and Sixers this weekend. For Simmonds, the rugged former Flyer signed a one day contract to retire a Flyer. Iverson, on the other hand, had a statue built commemorating his legendary career at the Sixers practice facility in Camden.
Both players deserve their flowers, so to speak. Simmonds and Iverson both incapsulate what many of us consider to be the ideal Philadelphia athlete. Tough, hard-working players that overcome the odds and left it all out there. Both players always embraced the city in a way that made them feel like one of us. That mark is indelible and a fun part of sports. It was nice to see both players return to be honored seeing the organizations give something back to two people that gave so much.
