Ramos Roundup Part 28: The Big Game

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Sixers Split Weekend Against Hawks, Wizards; Lowry Comes Home

After an eventful trade deadline that welcomed Buddy Hield and Cam Payne to Philly, the Sixers split their weekend slate of games. On Friday, Philly fell to the Trae Young (37 points and 12 assists) and the Hawks, but were incredibly short-handed. The Sixers were down four starters in this one so had little chance to win, although they did make the game competitive in the fourth quarter.

Saturday, the Sixers got Tyrese Maxey back and the All-Star played well, going for 28 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. And how about Ricky Council IV? The 22-year-old guard went off for 19 points to help bolster the Sixers secondary scoring in the win.

Moreover, in the midst of a busy weekend, the Sixers also signed guard Kyle Lowry to help fill the backcourt. Lowry, now 37, should help the Sixers replace some of the leadership that was lost in the Pat Beverly trade. We’ll see how the veteran will fit in the coming weeks.

Flyers Win Third Straight

Cal Peterson made 17 saves in the Flyers third straight win on Saturday over the Kraken. Scott Laughton, Ryan Poehling and Sean Couturier scored for Philadelphia in the win; it’s been ho-hum for the Flyers, who have returned to form after hitting a five-game losing skid prior to the all-star break. Philly has bounced back nicely, and are comfortably in a playoff spot.

Report: Eagles to Trade Riddick?

In an interesting turn off events, news broke Sunday that the Eagles have allowed edge Hassan Riddick rusher to seek a trade, according to Ian Rapoport. Riddick, 29, has been one of the birds best edge players in the last two seasons. It would be unfortunate to see him go.

Phillies Sign RHP Spencer Turnbull

Added to the Philly Sports news drop on Sunday was the Phillies’ signing of Spencer Turnbull. Turnbull, 31, comes to Philly from the Detroit Tigers, where he posted a 7.26 ERA in seven starts last season. He’s expected to offer some depth to the rotation that Dave Dombroski spoke about earlier in the off-season.
