Ramos Roundup Part 13: Dancing on Their Own

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies Close Out Braves in Game 4, Advance to NLCS

For the second consecutive season, the Phillies are headed to the National League Championship Series with their 3-1 win over the Braves this week. Trea Turner (4-for-4 with a HR) and Nick Castellanos (3-for-3 with 2 HRs) powered the Philly offense in the series clincher, while Ranger Suarez turned in five strong innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.

The stage is now set; Monday night, the Phillies will host the Arizona Diamondbacks at the Bank for game 1. Ironically enough, the D-Backs share a few similarities with the Phils; Arizona has received star-making performances from their star players in key moments, in addition to their strong pitching coming out of the bullpen. The only difference? Give Philadelphia the edge in experience. That should go a long way for them.

Flyers Go 1-1 on Season Opening Road-Trip

The Flyers opened their season this past week with a 4-2 win in Columbus. Travis Konecny picked up two goals in the win, while teammate Scott Laughton added a couple of assists in the Thursday season opener.

The club was not as fortunate in Ottawa on Saturday, as they were beaten soundly by the Senators 5-2. There wasn’t much to glean from the performance, but for the rebuilding Flyers, there’s going to be nights like this. The Senators physical forecheck wore down the Flyers’ defense and didn’t miss on some quality scoring chances. There was little that goaltender Carter Hart could do to thwart the Ottawa attack.

The orange and black will return to action Tuesday, where they’ll host the Vancouver Canucks in their home opener.

Sixers Host Blue vs. White Inter Squad Game

Team Maxey (blue) squared off against Team Melton (White) in an inter-squad scrimmage game this past weekend. Maxey’s team, which consisted of Tobias Harris, PJ Tucker, and recent signee Mo Bamba, picked up the win. The Sixers’ season is set to kick off in just 11 days.

Eagles Undefeated Streak Snapped by Jets

Jalen Hurts tossed three interceptions in the Eagles 20-14 loss to the Jets on Sunday. The win marked the first time New York had ever defeated Philly after losing their last 12 matchups with the birds. The game was mostly about the quality defense that both teams came up with in crucial moments, but the last seven drives for Philly were especially lackluster. Perhaps the insult to injury was the fact that the Eagles also lost tackle Lane Johnson to an ankle injury. Johnson, a huge part of the Eagles pass protection, would be a devastating loss to the offensive line should he miss significant time.  His status will have to be monitored throughout the week.

The Eagles will head into a primetime matchup with the Miami Dolphins next week on Sunday Night Football and will need to be much better than they were this week.
