Ramos Roundup Part 119: One Shining Moment

The Ramos roundup is a weekly sports column highlighting all the news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Flyers Move Into Playoff Spot with Win Over Bruins

In a pivotal game with playoff implications, the Flyers picked up two valuable standings points in a 2-1 overtime win over the Bruins on Sunday. The game winning goal came off the stick of prized rookie Porter Martone, who put an exclamation point on a strong first week in the NHL with his first goal in the national. Christian Dvorak also scored as well.

With the win, the Flyers move into a playoff spot for the first time since January 12th. The orange and black will hit the road for their final road trip of the regular season. That trip begins Tuesday, up the turnpike in New Jersey against the Devils.

Sixers Slip to Play-In with Loss to Pistons

Similarly to the Flyers, the Sixers continue to battle for their playoff lives this weekend. Unfortunately, Philly took a 116-93 loss to the Pistons on Saturday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Tyrese Maxey added 23 points, while Paul George stayed hot with a 20 piece of his own. Rookie VJ Edgecombe added 19 points in the loss as well. The Pistons, on the other hand, were led by former Sixer Tobias Harris’ 19 points and Daniss Jenkins, who had 16 points and 14 assists.

With the loss, the Sixers slip back into the play-in portion of the NBA playoffs. Philadelphia would draw the Charlotte Hornets in play-in should this hold. The Sixers will hit the road for their last road trip of the season Monday night against the San Antonio Spurs.

García Homers, but Rockies Avoid Sweep with Phillies

The Phillies had their four-game win streak snapped on Sunday, with a 4-1 loss to the Rockies. Colorado salvage the finale of a three-game series, thanks to former Phillies’ prospect Mickey Moniak two home run performance. Much maligned RHP Taijuan Walker took the ball in the loss, giving up seven hits, four earned runs and three home runs over five innings.

The Phils will host the San Francisco Giants on Monday.

Union Remain Winless with Loss in Charlotte

Another day, another loss for the Philadelphia Union.

On Saturday evening, the Union headed to Charlotte looking for their win in MLS play, but it was not to be. Midfielder Danley Jean Jacques scored in the 78th minute for the Union’s lone goal of the match.

The loss sets a record for MLS futility to begin a season. The Union are now the first team in Major League Soccer to start a campaign 0-6 after winning the Supporters’ Shield crown the season before, according to The Inquirer.

The boys in blue will look to reverse their fortunes next Saturday, when the Union will travel to Stade Saputo to face CF Montréal on Saturday, April 11th. The match will broadcast on Apple TV with kickoff set for 2:00 p.m.
