Ramos Roundup Part 105: Ice Cold

The Ramos roundup is a weekly sports column highlighting all the news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Eagles Pummel Raiders 31-0

In a game they needed to have, the Eagles picked up a dominant victory over the lowly Raiders on Sunday. Jalen Hurts rebounded from his worst NFL game last week to throw three touchdown passes while compiling a 154.9 passer rating in the win. On the other side of the football, the Eagles defense was stellar, holding the Raider offense to just 75 total yards for the game.

Las Vegas is not a good football team, but the Eagles needed a win like this to not only snap a three game skid, but also to just generally build confidence. For most of the season, the offense has stagnated and players have and playcalling have left a lot to be desired. However, a win like Sunday’s could get this team moving in the right direction again.

PG Drops 35, but Hawks Sink Sixers 120-117

The Sixers will handed a tough road loss on Sunday in Atlanta Sunday night. In inarguably his best game with Philadelphia, Paul George had 35 points for while Joel Embiid added 22 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks. Rookie VJ Edgecombe had 26 points of his own and six rebounds in the loss.

Philly won’t return to action until Friday, when they had to Madison Square Garden to take on the Knicks.

Phillies Ink Schwarber to Massive Extension

On Wednesday, the Phillies announced that slugger Kyle Schwarber has re-signed with the club on a 5-year deal worth $150M. Schwarber, who belted 56 home runs last season, had a bevy of suitors with the likes of the Orioles, Reds and the cross-state Pirates looking to sign the DH, but he opted to stay in Philly. The 32-year-old was the runner-up for the National League MVP award this season and led baseball with 132 RBIs. Additionally, Schwarber’s .856 OPS ranks 15th out of 224 qualified players over the last four seasons.

Ultimately, the key question in his signing will be how Schwarber will age over the life of the deal. Last season was a career year for him, but it remains to be seen if he can replicate his MVP caliber numbers or if he is bound for some regression.

Time, of course, will tell.

Hurricanes Sweep Flyers in Back to Back Shootouts

The Flyers picked up a point in each of their weekend games. On Saturday, the orange and black jumped out a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Bobby Brink and Trevor Zegras. Then, the Hurricanes stormed back into the game before handing the Flyers their first shootout loss of the season.

On Sunday, it was Carolina that jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and the Flyers who were on the comeback trail. Zegras scored the game tying goal late before the Flyers met

Report: Union to Trade Glesnes, Sell Baribo

According to MLS insider Tom Bogert earlier this week, the Union are in the process of finalizing a trade of Jacob Glesnes. The deal will send the 31-year-old to the LA Galaxy. Additionally, Bogert also is reporting that the club is in the process of selling off striker Tai Baribo to D.C. United in a cash transfer worth $4 Million dollars.

Both moves come as a surprise since both players have been productive veterans on the club. However, it is the type of moves that are in line with the Union’s typical team building philosophy. Especially in the case of Baribo at his price since Philadelphia already has Bruno Damiani, Milan Iloski and the newly signed 20-year-old forward Ezekiel Alladoh in the fold up front.

We’ll follow up on the Union this off-season as more becomes available.
