Ramos Roundup Part 10: Eat, Sleep, Sweep

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies Score Historic Sweep over Cardinals

The Phils picked up a big win over the Cardinals on Sunday in a 3-0 shutout at Citizens Bank Ballpark. Philly outscored St. Louis 22-3 over the weekend and are now a season high 14 games over 500. According to Matt Gelb, this is the first time the Fightins have swept the visiting red birds in Philly since 2003. The winning pitchers that day?  Vicente Padilla, Brent Myers and Amaury Telemaco.

Now that’s some serious recall right there.

Eagles Set for Roster Cuts on Tuesday

The Birds finished up the preseason 0-2-1 this past Thursday, and now it’s time to pare down the roster. On Sunday, the club announced seven roster cuts, leaving the roster at 70 players ahead of Monday morning’s practice. All rosters have to be at 53 players by the roster deadline, which is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

The Union Topple D.C. United 3-1

Mikael Uhre, Jack McGlynn, and Daniel Gazdag (PK) each tallied in the Union’s win in DC Saturday night. Gazdag’s PK goal was his 36th in Union blue. Here’s some of the highlights.

Former Flyers First Round Pick Signs AHL Deal with Toronto

Former Philadelphia Flyers first-round pick Jay O’Brien signed with the Toronto Marlies, the team announced Friday. Remember that O’ Brien was one of two first-round picks Philly made in 2018; O’Brien was the 19th selection in that draft, while the other first round selection turned out to be Joel Farabee.

The O’Brien pick shines a light on the mismanagement that was the Ron Hextall regime for the Flyers. Considered a reach in that draft, the 23-year-old bounced around college hockey before the Flyers opted not to sign O’Brien this summer. The move made him a free agent and Philly received a 2024 second-round draft pick as compensation.
