Konecny’s hat trick powers Flyers 5-3 win over Capitals

Travis Konecny notched his second career hat trick in the Flyers 5-3 win over Washington on Wednesday night at the Wells Fargo Center. It was a game effort for the Flyers, who appeared to have their skating legs in this one and at times, just simply outworked the Capitals for loose pucks along the boards. Konecny continues to just pile up the points this season, as he now is on pace for 47 goals. That would smash his previous career-high in tallies which is 24.

According to NHL stats, Konecny (10-8—18 in 10 GP) extended the NHL’s longest active point streak to 10 games. The only Flyers player in the past 20 years with a longer run was Shayne Gostisbehere, who collected points in 15 straight games back in 2015-16.

Konecny wasn’t the only player who popped for a big game, however. Scott Laughton registered a goal and two assists in the win as well. The opening frame, powerplay goal for Laughton was his 10th of the campaign. The tally also marked the fifth 10-goal season of Laughton’s career. He and Konecny would team up for the Flyers league-leading eighth shorthanded goal of the season later in the contest.

Owen Tippett also added a goal and an assist and has made the Claude Giroux trade look better by the shift this season. Tippett is on pace for his first 20 goal season of his young career.

The Flyers have now won six of their last seven games and for the first time in a while, the entire process looks promising. A lot of the players that are performing during this current run are players we know will be here. It’s been nice to watch the club win a little bit in what clearly remains a transitional season for the orange and black.

Did you know?

According to NHL Stats, the Capitals and Flyers traded goals in the game just 19 seconds apart. The fastest two combined goals by two teams this season is eight seconds when the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets did so on Nov. 17, 2022.

What’s next

The Flyers will return to action on Saturday night, as they once again take on the Washington Capitals in the second round of this home-and-home series between Metro division rivals.
