The Flyers outplayed the Jets in an entertaining first period in route to their in back to back wins. Let’s wrap:
Travis Konecny Posts ‘Gordie Howe hat trick’ in First Period
Typically, the Flyers leading point getter Travis Konecny is involved. However, on nights like Thursday, he was ultra involved. The 26 year-old collected a goal, an assist and fight to complete the Gordie Howe Hattrick all in the first period.
Watching Konecny flourish into the leader and nightly contributor over the last season and a half as been a treat. He clearly seems to have embraced a leadership role and has taken his game to new heights now that he is contributing on the penalty kill as well. He’s become a nightly threat for the Flyers.
Poehling, Frost Add Multi-Point Nights
Speaking of the Flyers’ penalty kill, they were able to pick up yet another short-handed goal courtesy of Ryan Poehling. The tally was Philadelphia’s 11th shorthanded goal of the season – tied with Dallas and St. Louis for the most in 2023-24. According to NHL stats, the last time the Flyers recorded more shorties in a single season was in 2010-11, when club posted 13. Poehling also used his excellent straight line speed to set up the games first goal with a cross-crease pass to Tyson Foerster.
Morgan Frost also had himself another quietly strong game. On the whole, Frost has played well since his meeting with Tortorella. His play away from the puck has been improved and he’s providing playmaking for the club when needed as well. Hopefully, Frost finishes the year strong and perhaps that meeting with the coach brought him some leeway.
Did You know?
According to NHL Stats, Sam Ersson recorded his 20th career win in his 39th game. Among goaltenders to debut with the Flyers, the last to record 20 career wins in fewer contests was Sergei Bobrovsky in 2010-11. Ersson made 28 saves in the win Thursday night as well.
On Deck
The Flyers will return to action on Saturday, when they play host to the Seattle Kraken, 7:00 p.m. puck-drop.
