Hart, Flyers Stand Tall in Overtime Win Over Penguins

Sean Couturier scored 3:55 into overtime and Carter Hart made 32 saves to help lead the Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the Penguins. This was the second consecutive win for the orange and black over Pittsburgh, sweeping the home and home series with their bitter inter-state rivals. You can read about that first gam here. Let’s get into it, shall we?

Tyson Foerster Stays Hot

At the 9:46 mark of the second period, Tyson Foerster tallied his fifth goal of the season to tie the game at one apiece. Travis Konecny (two assists) shuffled a pass over to Foerster in the high slot, and he then fired a bullet wrist shot high over the Penguins’ goaltenders right shoulder. The 21-year-old has now scored in three consecutive games.

According to NHL stats, the last Flyers rookie to record a longer goal streak was Nolan Patrick in 2018.

Don’t touch the kid, you will get burned right now.

Couturier Buries Sixth Career Overtime Winner

When Sean Couturier notched the game winner against the Penguins on Monday night, it was his sixth career overtime goal, which means he has tied Shayne Gostisbehere and Simon Gagne for the third most in franchise history, per NHL stats. The only players with more are Claude Giroux (11) and Jakub Voracek (9).

There was major (justified) concerns coming into this season on what version of Couturier the Flyers would be getting this season after missing 22 months of play to back surgery. With 17 points in 23 game played this season, I think it is safe to assume Couturier is still the excellent, two-way stalwart he’s always been with no noticeable drop-off in his play to date. Make no mistake; while there a number of reasons the Flyers surprising start to the season, having their number one centermen back in the fold is one that doesn’t seem to get enough credit sometimes. His presence has been felt in a big way.

Did You Know?

Sidney Crosby scored the Pens lone goal of the contest, and did so in style as his dominance of the Flyers reached historical levels. According to NHL stats, Crosby collected his 125th all-time point against the Flyers, surpassing Mario Lemieux for sole possession of the most against the franchise.

On Deck

The Flyers head out on the road for a three-game road-trip beginning in Arizona on Thursday night.
