The Flyers have reportedly offered their head coaching job to former Stanley Cup champion John Tortorella, as ESPN’s Kevin Weeks announced late last night:
Tortorella, 63, last coached in the NHL in 2021 with the Columbus Blue Jackets, stepping down from the role at the end of that season. His tenure ended with the most wins of any coach in Blue Jackets history.
As we know, Philadelphia has been searching for a new permanent head coach since December, after relieving Alain Vigneault of his duties. The intense Tortorella will be tasked with instilling a sense of accountability in the Flyers locker-room, as there has been a commonly held belief over the last few seasons that issues existed on that front.
The Flyers are no doubt getting a winner here. The Boston, Massachusetts native is the winningest American-born coach in NHL history. He is also a two-time Jack Adams winner. His fiery demeanor is likely to be a hit among some of the fanbase.
Tortorella has proven he can lead teams to success upon stepping behind a bench. With the Flyers up against the cap, immediate success hopefully is imminent.
According to Pierre Lebrun, the Flyers are expected to discuss details of a contract tomorrow. We’ll continue to follow this story as more becomes available.
