Flyers Fall to Lowly Blue Jackets 3-2 in Shootout

The Flyers losing ways continue on Thursday when the Blue Jackets came to down. Philly has now lost six of it’s seven games. Let’s wrap:

Konecny Scores Twice and is Named to Second All-Star Team

Prior to the game, the Flyers most consistent offensive performer Travis Konecny was voted to the All-Star game by the league. Konecny, who is on pace for his first 40 goal campaign, decided to celebrate with two goals. His second of the night was truly a beauty, as Konecny swooped into the offensive zone and pulled off a backhand toe-drag maneuver that you can see here.

The All-Star nod is a well-earned honor for the 26 year-old.

Tortorella Sits Atkinson and Frost

In our post-game wrap-up, we discussed the possibility of Cam Atkinson sitting out a game for a mental reset. Coach John Tortorella took it one step further and decided to sit Morgan Frost as well. The Flyers played a forward short and an extra defensemen and while this coaching staff loves sending messages, there is a time and place for everything. It did seem like overkill to scratch two players and knowingly run with a shorthanded forward group.

The Flyers have played a lot of hockey recently with tons of travel. Philly faded as this game wore on and with so did their structure. Seldom will you hear Tortorella want to use fatigue as an excuse. However, it’s the reality of the matter whether the coach wants to admit that or not.

As for Frost, it has become clear that he is not a favorite of the coach and is the preferred option to sit when things aren’t going well. Frost’s play has been erratic this season to be sure, but he’s been no more inconsistent than some other players. At times, it’s become obvious that some players have been given infinite rope.

Did You Know?

Travis Konecny will now join former captain Claude Giroux (7x) as the only Flyers players to skate in multiple NHL All-Star Games since the club’s last trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010.
