Flyers Fall to Capitals 2-1, As Playoff Window Closes

Veteran defensemen Erik Johnson scored the lone goal for Philadelphia, but that wasn’t enough to secure the win or a playoff positioning. Let’s wrap or the final time this season:

Opening Goal….So We Thought

In one of the crazier plays you’ll see in a game, Joel Farabee appeared to give the Flyers an early lead if not for referee Kelly Sutherland losing sight of the puck. Sutherland blew play dead, as Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren boxed the puck straight up into the air before it then hit Farabee and went into the net.

Don’t see that one everyday, while it took the officiating crew a moment to make a ruling.

Team Awards

One of my favorite traditions at the end of each season is the Flyers, end-of-season awards. It’s hard to argue with this seasons choices as well:

Props to all of these players. Especially for a player like Sam Ersson, who handled things as well as a player could amid the Carter Hart situation. It’s also safe to say that all of these players were key reasons as to why the Flyers overachieved in the way that they did this season.

Did You Know?

According to NHL stats, Alex Ovechkin netted the game-opening goal with his 49th career tally against the Flyers. Only two players have scored 50 against Philly Sidney Crosby (55) and Mario Lemieux (51).

On Deck

As the season comes to an end, we’ll move onto off-season topics for the Flyers, including the Draft, free agency, trades and much more. Check out all the coverage at Phiredup Sports and my new podcast covering the team, Wooder Cooler Talk.
