Ersson, Flyers Edge Panthers 2-1

The Flyers returned to action from their All-Star break and snapped a five game losing streak in Florida on Tuesday night. As the Eastern Conference playoff race heats up, a Flyers win comes at the perfect time. Let’s wrap:

Ersson Stands Tall in Early Game Onslaught

Despite just being called upon to make 20 saves, Ersson was the Flyers best player in the first period. The Panthers brought a heavy dose of forechecking pressure early in the game. They tallied on the powerplay with a pinpoint accurate wrist shot from Carter Verhaeghe, but this game could have gotten out of hand if not for Ersson. The Flyers collectively picked up their play in the second and third periods after that.

There’s so much on the shoulders of the young Swede right now. With the recent allegations taking Carter Hart away from the team, the 24 year-old Ersson is now tasked with the responsibilities of a de facto number 1 goaltender. He may be that kind of player in the future, but I couldn’t imagine the pressure. He has responded admirably to the challenge.

Cates Pots Game Winner

You’d have to go back late October to remember the last time Noah Cates scored a goal. Look it up, it’s true. But this effort here from the second-year pro was all about determination. It’s been a rough season to date for Cates, as a broken foot in November put him on the self for 6 to 8 weeks. He offers a strong forechecking Prescence, the ability to play wing and center, and a strong defensive zone conscience.

It’s always nice to see players like that get rewarded and come up big in a moment. Hopefully, Cates can stay healthy the rest of the season and continue to contribute.

Did You Know?

Travis Konecny leads the Flyers with 23 goals in 2023-24 and is on pace for 37 goals. It would be the most by a Flyers skater since Scott Hartnell tallied 37 goals in 2011-2012, according to NHL stats.

On Deck

The Flyers will head home to take on the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday, 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
