Ramos Roundup Part 61: Commanding the Lead

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia Sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Eagles Take Down Commanders 26-18 on TNF

On Thursday, the Eagles took down the Washington Commanders for NFC East supremacy and improve their record to 8-2 on the season. The victory was the birds sixth straight, punctuated by Saquon Barkley’s 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Barkley now has 738 total rushing yards this season and is averaging a gaudy 7.2 yards per carry in the second half this season.

Philadelphia will hit the road in Week 12 to face the Rams in a Sunday Night Football showdown.

Zach Wheeler a Finalist for Cy Young

In Phillies news, LHP Zach Wheeler has been named a finalist for the National League Cy Young award this past week. Wheeler, 34, finished up a banner campaign for the Fightins this season, posting a career-high 16-wins and 2.57 ERA in 200 innings pitched in 2024. Moreover, this is the second time in the Smyrna, Georgia native’s career that he has pitched in at least 200 innings, which is a rarity today given the game’s more specialized nature now. Wheeler joins Atlanta’s Chris Sale and Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes as finalists for the award. The winner will be announced this coming week on November 20th.

Sixers Can’t Handle Magic, Fall to lowly 2-10

On Friday, a late-game, 9-0 run by Orlando sent the spiraling Sixers to an awful 2-10 record this season. Rookie Jared McCain led Philadelphia in scoring for a second consecutive game with 29 points. He shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range.

With yet another loss, Philly also dropped to 0-2 in the NBA Cup as well, to make matters worse.

The Sixers are in dire need of all three of their star players to be readily available. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Joel Embiid is already questionable for Monday’s game against Miami. Tyrese Maxey has missed the last five games and as a result, hasn’t played since November 2nd.

Moreover, some of the underlying numbers have been unkind to Philly lately too. It’s not good folks and it may not be getting better.

Rumor: Mikael Uhre Drawing Interest on Transfer Market

According to Transfermarket, Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen and VfL Bochum are both showing interest in Philadelphia Union forward Mikael Uhre. Uhre, 30, scored 12 goals this season for the boys in blue. After the Union decided to fire Jim Curtin, it appears the club will be shifting their focus to remolding the roster as well.

We’ll see where this goes.

Flyers Dominate Buffalo, but Injuries Piling Up

After putting together their most complete effort of the season on Saturday night, the Flyers are beginning to play more like the team we saw in the first half of last season. However, the orange and black are beginning to deal with their share of injuries following their 5-2 win over the Sabres. According to Anthony SanFillippo, defensemen Emil Andrae is expected to miss some time. So far, this is a Flyers defense core already missing Cam York and Jamie Drysdale, although York may be ready to return very soon. For that reason, Travis Sanheim is playing a ton of minutes early in the season.

Lastly, Sam Ersson landed on injury reserve with a lower-body injury after practice Sunday as well. The Flyers will host the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night so we’ll see who ends up suiting up on defense and in-goal.
