Sixers Prepare for PG, Sign Gordon and Drummond
NBA free agency opened on Sunday and the Sixers are landing prize free agent in the Clippers’ star Paul George. The 34-year-old small forward met with the Sixers on the west coast Sunday evening, with Philadelphia being the “frontrunners” to land him, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. According to Evan Sidery, Philadelphia is prepared to offer George a four-year, $212 million deal.
As of Monday morning, George and the Sixers have agree to terms and the L.A. native is now Philly bound.
In other team news, the Sixers have signed Eric Gordon and backup big-man Andre Drummond to deals. Free agent G Kelly Oubre Jr. is signing $16.3 million deal to stay with Philadelphia as well. His deal includes a player option on the 2025-2026 season for Sixers’ starting two-guard, according to Woj.
Moreover, the Sixers are planning to re-up All-Star Tyrese Maxey to a five-year, $204 million maximum contract extension.
Phillies Salvage Series with Marlins
With stars Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber out with injuries, the Phils gut out a 7-6 win to split their series with the Marlins on Sunday. Alec Bohm homered, Trea Turner hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning, while Nick Castellanos doubled, had two singles and drove in three runs in the win.
Philly will have to continue to manufacture their offense in other ways while Harper and Schwarber recover. Without them, the Phils lack some significant power in their lineup. Nonetheless, the Phillies still have the best record in baseball at 55-29. They head out on the road for a three game set with the Chicago Cubs.
Flyers Draft Jett Luchanko 13th Overall
The NHL Draft took place this weekend at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The event was quite the spectacle, as the NHL teams welcomed their newest batch of prospects to the league fold. The Flyers selected Guelph Storm centreman Jett Luchanko with the 13th overall pick after trading pick 12 to the Minnesota Wild. Luchanko, 17, finished as the 20th-best North American prospect by NHL Central Scouting.
Despite becoming a popular name in scouting circles, some pundits and fans felt that Luchanko was a “reach” by the Flyers. However, Luchanko’s excellent skating ability and keen hockey sense must have someone intrigued in the organization. As one of the younger draft eligible players this year, the Flyers hope is that more offensive capabilities will develop over time.
Union Lose Again, Carranza Moves On
The Union continue to slide down the Eastern Conference Standings with yet another loss, this time on the road in Montreal. Quinn Sullivan got the U on the board first, but Montreal would rally back into the match and tally four times. Jesus Bueno also scored for Philly in the loss.
Moreover, the club has made it official that striker Julián Carranza is departing from the Union. Carranza will now officially join Feyenoord in the Netherlands where he’ll play in the Eredivisie League.
Carranza will be missed on and off the pitch in Philly. The 24 year-old spoke candidly with the media, especially when it came to the club’s struggles this season. He always seemed approachable and willing to answer any question head on. We wish him the best of luck in his next step playing professional football.
