Sounders Stop Union for Second Straight loss 3-2

For the first time since 2021, the Union were handed a back-to-back defeats on Tuesday by the Seattle Sounders. The boys in blue had previously dropped a hard fought match with Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Let’s wrap on all the sights and sounds of the match:

Gazdag Now All-Time Leader in Goals

Daniel Gazdag is now the Union’s All-Time leading goal scorer with his perfectly placed strike in the second half. The goal came just a minute after Jack McGlynn got the U on the board, when Quinn Sullivan delivered a perfectly placed ball to the centre of the box. Ironically enough, Gazdag scored his 57th career-goal across all competitions in the 57th minute to become the all-time goals leader.

“It’s obviously a nice number,” Gazdag said. “I’m happy to become the All-Time leader of the club. That’s amazing. When I got here three years ago, I wasn’t thinking about that. I’ll be happier in the future, but today it’s annoying to play like that.”

Of course, the 28-year-old is referring to the U yielding three goals in the first half of the match. A lot of unforced turnovers, guys not tracking back and overall lack of sharpness from Philadelphia in this one. No one was happy and frustration has been boiling over for everyone, but more on that below.

Jose Martinez Voices Frustration on Social Media….Midgame

Philly’s Jose Martinez took to social media to vent some of his frustrations during the match, but not in the most conventional way. The player fired off social media post you see above at halftime of a match that his team was trailing 3-0. The always pragmatic Jim Curtin did discuss his thought process in making three substitutions at half, in which Martinez was a victim.

“We could’ve subbed 10 guys,” Curtin said. “We made a change, it wasn’t his best half.”

One would imagine that this effort below had something to do with the decision to make the switch. The Union did show a lot more character and grit in the second half, but it would be too much to overcome with first half efforts like the one see here.

They Said It

Jim Curtin on Chasing Game: “It’s emotionally and physically draining. We have to find a way to not concede, with what any who watches soccer, would say are silly goals. We have to clean that up.”

Daniel Gazdag on the Union’s first half: “It was the worse first half since I’ve been here. We deserved to be down three goals. We were a disaster.”

Jakob Glesnes on Philly conceding the first goal in six of the last nine games: “It’s not good enough. We are best when we are playing with a lead. We shouldn’t have to wait until halftime to figure it out.”
