Flyers Fail to Weather Hurricanes in 3-2 OT Loss

It wasn’t a win, but the Flyers picked up a valuable standings point in their pursuit of a playoff spot. Let’s wrap:

York’s New Minutes

We’ve seen Cam York showcase some impressive offensive prowess in the past, but tonight his game was about longevity. The 23 year-old defensemen logged 29 minutes in the loss and has been a steady blueline presence as the season has progressed. He’s made a number of quality reads and activations, prolonging the Flyers offensive zone time especially at even strength. His progression this year has been a treat to watch and could help accelerate Philly’s rebuild if he can still on this trajectory.

Decisions, Decisions

In overtime, the Flyers opted to the start with the defensive conscience Ryan Poehling, Joel Farabee and Scott Laughton. The Hurricanes are a deep team with lots of talent so I can understand what the coaching staff may have been thinking there. Farabee had some good chances and Laughton scored earlier in the game. However, in the puck possession game that 3-on-3 is, speed and skill always will win out. Morgan Frost, Owen Tippett and Travis Konecny may have been the better choice to start the extra frame with, given their penchant for play creation.

Nevertheless, the Flyers skated stride for stride with a high-caliber opponent in a tough place to play down three defensemen and Sean Couturier. They deserve some marks for that.

Did You Know?

According to NHL stats, Owen Tippett assisted on the Flyers’ tying goal and extended his point streak to a career high five games.

On Deck

The Flyers will continue to run the gauntlet when they return to action on Saturday against the Boston Bruins, 1:00 p.m. puckdrop.
