Late Goal Sinks Flyers in 4-1 loss to Hurricanes

Travis Konecny scored his team-leading 12 goal of the season on a breakaway in the second period, but that would be the lone offense the Flyers would muster in their divisional battle with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Philly is still looking for their first, come-from-behind win of the season. The club is a lowly 0-10-1 this season when they surrender the first tally in a game. A far cry from where they were in comeback wins after picking up 16 in 2022-2023. With that said, let’s check the game notes, shall we?

Hart’s Misfortune

At the 16:34 mark of the third period, Carolina’s leading scorer Seth Jarvis caught up to a loose puck with a defending Travis Sanheim in pursuit. Jarvis then took a quick, deceptive looking shot low to the pads of Carter Hart. Hart, who was otherwise sound in this game, initially stopped the shot with his skate and trapped it. When the Flyers netminder shuffled back into the crease, he inadvertently dragged the puck back into the net. Hart’s blunder put a blemish on yet another solid outing for him.

Laughton Struggling

Ice time is usually proper indicator on how a player is performing. For Flyers swiss army knife Scott Laughton, last night’s performance was a summary of his season thus far. He only logged 12:25 of ice time and was directly responsible for the Hurricanes second goal in which he failed to clear a loose puck, in addition taking a bad cross-checking penalty at the end of the second period.

If not for Noah Cates‘ injury, Laughton may have found himself in the pressbox. The 29-year-old is a quality veteran, fan favorite and leader, but he a mental reset might not be a bad thing for him at this point.

Did You Know?

According to NHL EDGE, defensemen Travis Sanheim has skated a total of 78.21 miles this season, the third-highest total among NHL skaters behind Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin (80.30 mi) and Columbus’ Ivan Provorov (79.79 mi).

On Deck

The Flyers will take on the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday at Wells Fargo Center, 7:00 pm puck drop.
