Phillies Rally for Six Runs in 9th to Win Nine Straight
In one of the coolest wins in some time, Kyle Schwarber launched a two-run home-run with two outs to hurtle Philadelphia to a 6-4 walk-off win on Sunday.
It is the Fightins’ ninth consecutive victory, but it didn’t come easy.
The Phillies entered the ninth inning trailing 4-0 and appeared to be headed for a listless Sunday afternoon loss. Then, Bryce Harper led off the ninth with a double before the Cardinals recovered to record two fly outs to left field. J.T. Realmuto came to the plate and slapped a single to keep the inning alive. Thereafter, Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien walked Justin Crawford to load the bases. Edmundo Sosa was next to come to the plate and pulled a ball down left field line, clearing the bases and pulling the Phillies to within one run at 4-3.
Bryan De La Cruz would follow and scored Sosa after knocking a pitch past St. Louis shortstop J.J. Wetherholt to tie the game. Then came Shwarber’s turn and the big fella would not miss; a 459-foot missile from Scwarber to straightaway center field won the game for the Phils. According to the broadcast, the walk-off homer was also the first walk-off dinger from a Phillies hitter since 2023.
Ironically enough, that walk-off was also hit by Kyle Scwarber.
The Phillies head to the Midwest for a three-game set with the Mariners beginning Monday at 9:40 p.m.
Eagles Drop Second Preseason Matchup to Pats 24-21
The Eagles returned to preseason action on Saturday, dropping a 24-21 decision to the Patriots. Not necessarily concerning, considering the active roster is made up of mostly roster bubble types and rookies looking to make a name for themselves. Nevertheless, running back Carson Steele made a strong case for earning a roster spot with the Birds in this game. Steele, 23, made the most of his 18 touches, rushing for 117 total yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Also, my thoughts and prayers are with Eagles running back Ja’Quinden Jackson. Jackson, 24, was taken off the field in an ambulance after being injured on the game’s opening kickoff. During the game, Philadelphia announced that Jackson had strength and movement in all extremities and had been taken to a local hospital. According to Jackson’s agent Damien Butler, the player accompanied the Eagles back to Philadelphia upon being released from the hospital. At the hospital, the Jackson’s CT scan came back negative thankfully.
Union Tie Austin F.C. to Remain Unbeaten in Six Straight
On Saturday, the Union played Austin FC to a 1-1 draw at Q2 Stadium. The 16-year-old wunderkind Cavan Sullivan opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Austin tied the match just three minutes later. Sullivan has really come into his own of late, registering 6 goal contributions in his last 4 games. Goalkeeper Andre Blake delivered crucial saves to help the Union earn a point on the road, including the one shown above in extra time.
The Union travel to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday, August 29th to face Red Bull New York. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off and will broadcast on Apple TV.
