The Flyers have played four games this preseason. They are now 1-3 in those games and have been outscored 10-4. Here are some news and notes from the contest.
- Goaltender Felix Sandstrom left the game after the first period with an apparent lower body injury, according to general manager Chuck Fletcher. The 25-year-old goaltender stopped just 2 shots in the game. Veteran journeymen backup goaltender Troy Grosnick made 20 saves in relief. It’s a shame for Sandstrom, who likely had inside track on being the backup goaltender to Carter Hart.
- Bruins’ youngsters Marc McLaughlin and John Beecher each scored a pair of goals in the shutout win. The Flyers younger players were noticeably quiet this afternoon, apart from perhaps Noah Cates, who logged a team-high four shots in the loss and continues to impress. Morgan Frost also had some bright moments in the first period as well, but it was otherwise pedestrian outing for number 48.
- Travis Sanheim logged a team-high 23:45 TOI for the Flyers this afternoon. He and Rasmus Ristolainen served as the team’s top pair in this one.
- After a strong first period from the Flyers, the club wilted under the pressure once Boston ratcheted their games. Philadelphia frequently had this issue the last few seasons, where they would play a good first period to follow it up with a poor middle and final frames. It’s likely something that will be a point of emphasis for John Tortorella’s staff in the final two preseason games.
- Speaking of the Flyers bench boss, Tortorella is expected to get back behind the bench for the final couple of preseason games. He’s been watching from the press box over the last three for evaluation purposes.
- Here’s an interesting insight quote from Flyers’ assistant coach Brad Shaw via the Inquirer’s Olivia Reiner:
The Flyers will wrap their preseason schedule with a home-and-home series with the New York Islanders on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively. On October 13th, the games count for real as the Flyers open up their season with the New Jersey Devils with the Wells Center.
