Eagles Battle Bills, Elements in 13-12 Win
Despite only mustering up 17 net yards in the second half, the Eagles hung on for a rainy, 13-12 victory on Sunday. It was yet another week of football where the Philadelphia defense led the way, bottling up Josh Allen and the high-flying Buffalo offense to a season-low 12 points. The birds additionally sacked Allen five times, which of course, is not an easy thing to do for a player with his size.
The offensive side of the football, on the other hand, was a different story. The Eagles offense sputtered for the entire second half. They punted the ball five times and weren’t able to move the chains at all. Sure, they dealt with poor field position, but this allowed the Bills back into the game; had Allen not missed receiver Khalil Shakir on a 2-point conversion attempt in the back of the end zone with five seconds to go, the offense would have been directly responsible for the loss. Sitting back and leaning on the defense worked this week, but it’s a dangerous game to play heading into the playoffs.
The Eagles will host the Commanders in the regular season finale next week in South Philadelphia.
Thunder Strike Sixers 129-104
The Sixers were also in action Sunday, taking on the defending NBA Champion Thunder in Oklahoma City. Tyrese Maxey continued his torrid scoring pace, posting 23 points in the first half. Maxey would finish the game with 28 points, as the Sixers would get blitzed by the Thunder in the second half. OKC outscored Philadelphia 38-24 in the third and forced eight turnovers, while big man Chet Holmgren paced the Thunder with 29 points in the win.
The Sixers had no real answer for Holmgren, as Joel Embiid missed the matchup due to a right ankle sprain and right knee injury management.
The Sixers will head to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies on Tuesday night.
Flyers Begin Roadtrip with 4-1 Loss to Kraken
The Flyers began a mid-holiday roadtrip in Seattle on Sunday night. Philly couldn’t solve Kraken netminder Philipp Grubauer as they were held scoreless for over 58 minutes before Carl Grundstrom potted the lone goal. The Flyers did create some good looks at the Seattle net, but looked a tad off when it came to completing the extra step to finish it off.
A couple of mistakes with the puck ended up in the back of their net as well. Most notably a miscommunication between Travis Sanheim and goalie Dan Vladar on an exchange with the puck behind the Philadelphia net that Chandler Stevenson scored on to give the Kraken a 2-0 lead. The game was more or less over after that.
Philadelphia will remain in the Pacific Northwest when they take on the Vancouver Canucks this Tuesday.
