Flyers Legend Bernie Parent Passes Away at the Age of 80
Firstly, I’d like to dedicate this roundup to Parent and all of his loved ones. He was an incredible goaltender and a fun loving person.
On Sunday, the Flyers announced that club legend and former goaltender Bernie Parent passed away at the age of 80. Of course, Parent is best remembered for his role on the famed Broad Street Bullies era Flyers, back stopping the orange and black to back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1974 and 1975. Additionally, he also won the Vezina Trophy for league’s best goaltender in the aforementioned seasons as well. Parent was enshrined in the hockey hall of fame in 1984, is one of six players on the Flyers to have his number retired, and was inducted into the inaugural class of the Flyers Hall of Fame in 1988.

I met Parent once on the Wildwood boardwalk with my cousin Megan around 2012. He was signing his new book, Journey through Risk and Fear, and signing autographs for fans at a launch event. I bought the book and asked Parent to sign it and he couldn’t have been more gracious. He asked us about our thoughts on the current Flyers and allowed us try on his Stanley Cup rings. He was an ambassador for the organization, but also one of the most beloved players ever to play in Philadelphia. In fact, he may be the most important player to play for a championship team on any of the city’s championship teams across all sports.
On behalf of all of us at Phiredup Sports, I offer condolences to all of Parent’s family and loved ones. He will be dearly missed.
Eagles Overcome 19-Point Deficit, Clip Rams 33-26
After a dormant first half that saw Philly produce just 33 total net yards of offense, the Eagles completed a comeback for the ages on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.
Falling behind 19-7, the second half began with a thud, as quarterback Jalen Hurts was cracked by Jared Verse and fumbled the ball. The Rams recovered and scored one play later, making the game 26-7. However, the defending Super Bowl Champions would go on and rattle off 26 unanswered points to win the game, staying undefeated on the year.
Much has been made of the Eagles offense this year and they had no choice but to open it up this week. Perhaps the most encouraging sign was that lead receiver A.J. Brown was heavily involved in the comeback bid. Brown, who collected six catches for 109 yards in the win, had produced just six catches through the first two weeks of the season.
The day belonged to Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, however. The Eagles special teams unit blocked two field goals, one by Jalen Carter, on a 36-yard attempt by Joshua Karty – and the last one by Jordan Davis on a 44-yard attempt, in the win as well. Davis returned his for a touchdown.
This is the kind of game a team with a championship foundation proves their mettle. it was far from perfect, but when they needed to make plays, boy did they ever.
The Eagles head to Tampa Bay next week 3-0.
Phillies Bite by Diamondbacks 9-2
The Phillies lost 2-of-3 with Arizona this weekend. Of course, this is relevant because Philly entered Sunday’s game three games back of the Brewers with seven games remaining for top playoff seed in the National League. Earlier in the day, the Brewers lost to the Cardinals, giving the Phils an opportunity to cut into the Milwaukee lead. Moreover, the Brewers also hold the tiebreaker over the Phillies.
In order to catch them, Philly needs to win four of their final games. They have six games remaining, as they return back home to finish off the regular season with a three-game series against the Marlins and then a two-game set with the Twins.
