Ramos Roundup Part 86: Father’s Day Slam

The Ramos roundup is a weekly Philadelphia sports column highlighting all the pertinent news of the week featuring the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Union.

Phillies Post 11 Runs in Father’s Day Sweep of Blue Jays

Phillies ace Zach Wheeler struck out nine Toronto hitters, while Nick Castellanos cranked a 6th inning grand slam to complete the sweep on Sunday. Alec Bohm also homered in the inning before and the recently called up Otto Kemp went 4-for-4 at the dish. Since a disastrous series in Pittsburgh, the Phils have gotten the bats going since returning home.

Moreover, they are just 2.5 games behind the division leading Mets. It’ll be interesting to see how they’ll approach the July 31st trade deadline, as both teams appear to be targeting similar help. According to Jim Bowden of the Athletic, both club’s are expected to search for bullpen help. The Phillies 4.50 bullpen ERA is ranked eighth worst in MLB this season.

In the meantime, the Phillies begin a four game series with the Miami Marlins on Monday.

Sixers Workout V.J. Edgecombe

According to Jake Fischer per Marc Stein’s substack, the Sixers have worked out Baylor guard V.J. Edgecombe this past week. Edgecombe, 19, is a 6-foot-4 athlete with explosive potential at both ends of the floor. He averaged 15 points in his freshman season and showcased some of that two-way potential that’s made him a potential top-5 pick in this draft.

The Sixers plan to bring in Rutgers’ wing Ace Bailey, but he is currently not scheduled to workout for Philadelphia yet.

The NBA Draft is Wednesday, June 25th. The Sixers, of course, own the third overall pick.
